Postcard #46. Catacombs

Alyson from Miami requested the Catacombs, of which there are many in the suburbs of Rome—ancient churches and burial tombs—but these days, only a few are open to the public and even fewer still actually contain bones.

I was struck by the texture of the place and the frescoes on the walls. There was also much scratching and carving, so I decided to combine these ideas for Alyson’s postcard. Originally I wanted to do some scrimshaw (scratching into bone) but my first attempts were terrible, so I rubbed dirt on to a piece of bone and scratched into that instead.
